how is it possible to dial into my server and be connected and everything works fine......BUT when I try and ping a computer name I get no response back. (the command just sits there and doesn't do anything, I can still use the computer as it doesn't lock up)

I am using a 98 client that dials into a win2000 server.

As I said everything works.........I can browse the network with network neighbourhood and I can map drives with win explorer.

I can ping the FQDN names without a problem and even the IP addresses. It seems to be that it is waiting for the name to be resolved but I am confident that I have WINS configured correctly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Your WINS probably is not configured correctly. Try this, Open the C:\Windows\LMHOSTS.SAM (resolves computernames to IP addresses like a WINS server does)file and put in the IP addresses and Computernames (NetBIOS Names) of a couple of PCs on the network. Example:
192.168.1.0 workstation1
192.168.1.1 workstation2

Once you have a couple of entries in there reboot, then reconnect to the network. Attempt to look at those PCs again.

Let me know if that worked.
