Hey

This would be my problem. we have a win2000 server with a router. i can access the network and internet from all other computers. I'am using dhcp on all. I've copied all the tcp/ip settings all ie setting from another computer to the one that cannot access the internet. The computer that is not working is using win2000. I've also reinstalled the tcp/ip connectioin with no luck, all setting and ipconfig info is the exact same as the working ones. There is no additional spyware or firewall on any of these computer. I've tried to ping or its actual addres 253.234.453.453 (not actuall one) and i cannot do either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has any questions just ask.

i "tracert it resolved it as 0.0.1

on the first hop it found the server then after than it timed out.

when i did do this same thing on a working computer with the same settings it resolved the ip (216.109.118.64) and did hops from my server to dsl server and so on. I hope this helps

When you do an ipconfig /all what do you get under DNS servers?

David.

when i do ipconfig /all under dns i get two ip address

142.161.130.***
142.161.2.***

i can ping both with replys using ping 142. etc.

Hmm..actually I was thinking name resolution, but then I saw the you can't ping internet servers by IP either...looks like I was barking up the wrong tree.

David.

now for some reason without changing a thing (or maybe i just screwed up last time) i can ping using the ip or yahoo but not the alias i also tried my service providers server ip and got a reply to. This does seem to be a DNS/name resolution issue. but that doesn't help me cause I still don't know how to fix it. HELP ME ty

Ok, now I'll ask what I was going to ask...

What dns do you get with ipconfig /all for computers that work. It seems a bit weird to me that it's using external dns. Oh and see what happens when you use nslookup with
David.

i get the same dns ip with the working computers as i do with the not working one.

142.161.130.155
142.161.2.155

as for the nslookup for i ran it on both working and none, and got the same results, the only difference being that it took much longer for the non working computer to respond with the information. ie it hangs for a bit then gives me the info. oh and as for the external dns, i believe it is our service providers dns servers (not 100%) sure.

again thanks for the help.

Tried to post, the computer does not like me today! HEre it is again:

Just some questions,

Are all your systems on real internet addresses, or are you using dhcp with NAT behind a firewall?

Do you have a local DNS server, or are the DNS addresses listed (which are valid internet addresses) all outside your system? If so, I would first suspect the system in question has the wrong gateway address, i.e., is it should point to your firewall as the gateway (and please don't tell me you do not have a firewall!).

If the gateway is wrong it will not find the DNS server, and will not resolve the addresses.

HTH,

David

i'am using dhcp with a nat behind a firewall.

i do not have a local dns server, but if i ping the dns ip with the computer (i cannot connect to the internet with) it responds. i've checked the gateway and all computers (working and the one thats not) are set to the same gateway address.

If youcan ping and get a response to the dns server, then the netcard is working (and firewall). But waht bothers me is that you said you can not resolve a name to an address.

On your ipconfig /all, does your system resolve with the correct IP address and correct gateway address? DNS requests are handled differently, but you do need various other functions to access the internet for traffic purposes. How about addiftional info on the other systems, are they win98, xp or 2000 type? Do you have a gateway server, and is the firewall between the internet and router, or behind the router and between the router and the LAN?

Thanks for all the help. I've finally figured it out. again thank you
