cannot open TIF file from within WebBrowser control

I have a VB application which uses the WebBrowser control. When you click on a link to open up a TIF file, it tries to open the file in Microsoft Word, which tries to convert the file to text.

I am able to open the file when going directly to Internet Explorer and clicking the link. The error occurs when I try to access it from within my VB application.
