I have a user that when she tries to open a jpg file in outlook it gives her the following error message:
The system cannot find the specified file.
If she saves the attachment to her computer it opens fine, but if she just tries to open it from the e-mail it gives her the error message. She has Windows XP and is using Outlook XP. Any ideas on what might be causing this and how it might be fixed? Thanks for you help in advance.

Hi, The Jpegs may be set to open with a different program from the mail. Either change the file assocciation in explorer. Tools-options-file types-
Or do the below:
MS Office Photo Editor is an optional install item.
Use Add/Remove Programs in the Windows Control Panel
to get to your Office XP Software and set the Photo Editor
feature to 'run from my computer'

Also make sure that the temp folders have appropriate permissions to allow saving & opening of the file.

I did some more searching of the MS Knowledge base and came up with unhelpful things like references to damaged OE Identities, and other strange things that aren't exactly what people are seeing. The interesting thing is that everyone that I've seen to report this behavior is running XP.

Maybe with some more research/info from multiple people, we can start to narrow it down:

1. What mail client software?
2. Is any version of MS Office installed?
3. Are there multiple windows user accounts?
4. Are the multiple identities/profiles within the mail client program?
5. Is this behaviour specific to a particular type of attachment or all attachments?

Try running "c:\program Files\common Files\microsoft Shared\photoEd\photoed.exe" /regserver

This will re-associate jpg files with the built in photo editor program.

Was there a resolution to this post ?

I have to same problem with some of my XP desktops.
