We have a Windows 2000 Server and we cannot map a drive back to the server (example:\\servername\share) if we are on a different VLAN (switch) than the server is located. We can map to it using the servers Ip Addresss, but not using server name and share. Does anyone know what would cause this? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

You should check your DNS setup .......
What happens when you ping the server using the fully qualified domain name, instead of the ip address?

I never set the DNS up. I will have to figure out how to do this. This is the only nt server we have and my knowledge is limited. Would you set DNS up on a server that is setup as a workgroup and not a domain. Also, we are not actually logging on to the server, we are just mapping a drive to access the program on the server. I'm sure if this would make a difference.

You do not need to use dns in your case, you can put an entry in the lmhosts file on the nt server for the w2k server.....
