At a client site of mine there is a Netware 5.1 server SP3. The server developed a problem whereby it was hanging when mounting sys. This was fixed by bypassing the startup and autoexec ncf files and loading disk drivers manually and running a vrepair.
Now the problem is no PCs on the LAN can log in or even see the tree or server but I can log in to the tree remotely.
I don't understand whats going on.

Should have said,

There is no hardware problem on the LAN as the pcs have a linux partition for imaging and they get an IP address from the server.

I would ensure that your NetWare server has the same IP credentials as what your Linux server gives to PCs in as much as IP address in the same subnet range, same default gateway and same subnet mask. Sounds like it could be a routing issue on the server.

As for the hanging mounting SYS, I would ensure you are running the latest SCSI drivers for your server and check that there are not two different versions (i.e. Server loads drivers from C:\NWSERVER on bootup but you load them manually from SYS:SYSTEM) -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

I found a way to bypass the problem. The PCs on the LAN had the Novell client installed with IP and IPX comptabilty, by re-installing the client with IP and IPX the PCs now log in.
I should add that when the vrepair was run on SYS it found 557,553 errors so what the repair did to what files is anyones guess.
If anybody has any ideas of what may have gone wrong please let me know, my client is happy that the PCs log in now but as they want to move to pure IP soon the IPX on the client will have to come off again, otherwise it looks like I'm going to have to replace the server.

Can you ping the server from the workstations? What happens on an IP workstation if you put the server IP Address into the server field on the advanced tab of the login box and try to login?

Have you setup Option 85 on your DHCP server to point to the IP Address of your NetWare server? -----------------------------------------------------
