Happy New Year All!

I have BE running only so that I will be able to manually backup our exchange server. The problem is that it runs these backups on its own twice a week and no matter what I have tried, I cannot seem to find where it is actually scheduled to run these automatic backups. If anyone has a clue, I would be very grateful please!!!

What version of BE are you running and what OS are you running it on?

Look for the JOB DEFINITIONS tab. There you will find a list of any jobs that are scheduled. If it's not deleted from there, the job will keep running.

The Active Job tab just shows which are the next jobs scheduled. If you cancel/delete those, it just cancels that specific job.

For example, you make a job that will run twice a day (noon and midnight). That job is created on the Job Definitions tab. On the Active Jobs tab, only the next job (lets say Midnight) will show up. Delete that job and only the Midnight job for that day will be deleted.

Thank you so much SQLBill!!!

I did look at that tab but I thought that maybe if I deleted that job, I would not be able to make the manual backup later. I don't mean to be stupid so please bare with me, but, what you're saying is that once that "job" is deleted, I'll still be able to manually backup the server but it won't run automatically. Correct?

You can always configure a manual backup using the "Backup" tab rather than creating an entry in the "Job Definitions" tab so yes, technically, you could delete the definition and still do manual backups. The question is whether or not BE would remember your selections if you only used the "Backup" tab.

I've never known BackupExec to continue running backups if the Job Monitor tab showed no occurances of the job in a "scheduled" state. Is that what you've been seeing?

Yes, exactly. There are nothing to show a backup is scheduled under the activity tab. Normally, if something is scheduled to run, it will show what and when. This shows nothing there. It just runs! The other thing it might be is something in the exchange server itself. I have been doing research on both scenerios. I still have no definate answer however.

Do you have all three options selected for viewing in the Job Schedule tab?

There are three buttons on the toolbar to toggle the display of the three different job status settings (scheduled, running and completed).

If you don't have the one for "scheduled" jobs toggled on, I could see how the job would appear to magically reschedule itself, when in fact, it is just not visible until after the fact.

I do have that on and I even scheduled a job to run just to see if it would show up, which it did.

I am very much at a loss on this one.

Do you know anything about Microsoft Exchange Server? If so, do you think it could be something in there that is triggering the backup?

If you delete them from Job Definitions, there won't be any more 'scheduled' jobs. Then when you create a new backup job, you need to make sure you set the schedule for it to be ONE TIME (that's not the actual wording...you'll see it when you set the schedule). This job will also show up in the job definitions, but it won't continue to run.

Ok, will do! Thank you very much for all your help everyone!!! I know I have probably been a pain in the butt over the past couple days but since you were so helpful I'm sure you'll have to deal with me again. [wink]

Thanks again! [smile2]

Any chance you might be running an at scheduled job?
worth looking.

I'm not even sure what an at scheduled job is. So, quite possibly! I tried everything I was told to try so far but to no avail. I'm not even sure that it's Backup Exec that is causing the backups. It could be something in the OS (Windows 2k) or in Microsoft Exchange Server.

What is an at scheduled job?

A scheduled job is one where you create the job and when asked when the job is to be run, you set the values (dates/times/etc) for the job to run. A non-scheduled job is one where you tell it to RUN NOW.

ok then, it is not a scheduled job. i deleted the job definition and everything and yet....

Sunday it ran anyway! from where, i have no idea. this is my dilema. no job definition in BE at all for this job and still it happens.

completely bewildering!!!

Is the job showing up in the Activity Monitor tab on Backup Exec?

If not, then it's not Backup Exec doing the job and you need to track down whatever else is doing backups to your tape system.
