I had accidentally deleted the rundll32.exe file from c:/windows/system folder... and don't know how to either extract it from the winme CD OR download it online [ie, where???] ANY help would be appreciated ebcause almost nothing works without this file. [like the entire control panel, the "image preview" etc..

many thanks in advance...

Try this from DOS :

Extract /L C:\Windows\System E:\Win_17.cab Rundll32.*

Where:
/L C:\Windows\System -> location to extract the file
E:\Win_17.cab -> CD-Rom drive and cabinet name
Rundll32.* -> the filename to extract

To get the complete parameters use "/?" switch after extract.
i.e.: extract /?

Regards

Yeah.. I've ran several antivirus scans, all with updated definitions. Typically I do that at and use their free online scan, which I've done as recent as about a week ago. The file itself was deleted a couple weeks ago, because I've seen the rundll32.exe many times AS a trojan... so I panicked [duh! is me] and deleted it...... Yeah I'm a fool.

I tried that extraction from DOS, didn't seem to work - although it appeared to, but after doing a search I failed to locate it....
Since I'm relatively new to computers here, if someone would show me the exact command string for the extraction of this file I would GREATLY appreciate it!!
again, many thanks to you two for responding....

BlackBerry,

The command I gave earlier was exactly the command you need to extract. Btw BeenThere is right, it should be in C:\Windows

Ok, since you said you're relatively new to computers, I'll go with the simplest way first. I assume you can boot into windows, so lets boot to windows. Open the DOS-Prompt, and type this command.

Extract /L C:\Windows E:\Win_17.cab Rundll32.exe

Change "E:\Win_17.cab" with your CD-ROM drive. If your CD drive is "D:" change the command into:

Extract /L C:\Windows D:\Win_17.cab Rundll32.exe

I hope it works now.
Regards

Thanks!!!! Your command string does work except it was missing a folder [the win_17 cab file was in a folder called "win9x"] maing the command:
E:\win9x rundll32.exe

thanks people!!! MUCH appreciated

I tried this fix just as described and it didn't work. What did I do wrong? Is there something not mentined that I should have done?

I'm not sure what was wrong. But there is nothing else you should have done. So can you tell us what have you done (in detail if you can)

Or you can try this first:
- Open explorer, browse into your WinME CD installer.
- Find the file named "WIN_17.CAB".
- (Double) Click to open the cab file in the Cab viewer.
- In the cab viewer, find the "Rundll32.exe"
- Right click on the file, extract to C:\Windows

Hope it works
