Here is my problem that just started happening yesterday after I restarted my computer. Right before that, I did a full defrag on my 2nd hard drive on d: drive with Norton Utilites.

When I restarted, I got the problem:

While initializing device SHELL, Cannot find or load required file KRNL386.exe

Now, I can't even start Windows in Safe Mode. After I did a step-by-step confirmation, I saw that the problem occurred right after all of my Windows drivers were loaded(.vxd files).

I use Windows 98.

Also, I checked out the Microsoft help with this problem, but it didn't work.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks, but I already tried this, and it didn't work. I can't get into safe mode to do half the stuff it says.

One of the best things about 98, is that it keeps a backup of the registry for the past 5 days, or more with ini file editting. Re-loading the system will not fix registry errors.

Try hitting F8 on startup, choose command prompt only. At the c: prompt, type:
cd\windows\command
then type:
scanreg /restore
and choose a date prior to the problem.
