I have a user who has Windows XP. They would like to drag a Word document icon that is on their desktop into the Word shortcut icon that is also on their desktop. They are not able to do this. In Windows 2000, you could do this and the Word application would open with the appropriate document. Is this no longer possible with Windows XP or is there a setting that I'm missing somewhere? Thanks....

Sometime I have to wonder why people want to do certain things.
Can the user not double click on the document(which is far easier that doing above and will achieve the same result)

Is the Word icon a novell distributed one, because i found word would open but not the document. it worked ok when it was a shortcut to word stored locally

There is a specific reason why the user (who is a developer) needs to drag and drop; unfortunately, they can't go into detail with me as to why.

No, the Word icon is not a novell distributed one. We are a Linux shop and those who need Windows have it installed on individual machines. Our server is Linux-based.

Delete the existing icon and drop a new one on the desktop. (In Program Files, the Office directory, there is a folder containing all the shortcuts).

Check then that the document really is a Word document, with a .doc extension.

If so, then be certain they apply the February 2004 IE Hotfix Cumulative update.

This issue can occure with the November, 2003 Cumulative update version of slhtml.dll.

Finally, do a repair of the file associations on the computer. See Doug Knox's list of fixes, I suspect a folder repair would help:
