When I try to import a new clip art item from Microsoft's Design Gallery Live, I get an error message:

"Cannot open file C:\WINDOWS\Temporary."
and an error message window "Processing Failed" with the dialogue "Return code: 80070005".

Any insights into this error would be appreciated. I have run out of ideas to resolve it.

Oh, I don't know....

Run Windows Update, get the machine up to snuff?
Run Defrag?
Reinstall the offending program?

Do a search on the error message, see what comes up?

Have you double-clicked on:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Artgalry\ARTGALRY.EXE

to install clipart?

I am at the end of my search, rather than at the begining of it. This means I have searched through every search engine and knowledge base and tech forum I can find, and have had no joy. I have also installed all of the updates to Windows 98 and Office 2000, but the problem still exists.

I suspect the 80070005 error might be the same one I see sometimes in ASP create.object scripts when the script tries to write to a read-only file or folder. So I think the cause is probably a read-only folder somewhere. But where?

The art downloads to the "temporary" folder (according to the download dialogue) - but where is the "temporary" folder in Windows 98? I know where to look for it in Win 2000, but not in 98.

The temporary folder(s) are wherever you want them to be.

Open an MS-DOS prompt. Type SET to display the list of environment variables. You should see two lines similar to the following:

SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

This will tell you where your temp files are located. Then make sure that you actually have folders with those names in those locations.

OK, I have installed the latest MDAC updates and I have checked my temp file settings, which are OK. Interestingly, the error number has now changed to 80070002! This is the one which Microsoft says is related to the Temporary Internet files folder being full, but it still occurs even after I empty that folder. This is really bugging me!
