Cannot dcpromo cannot locate domain 1

1 DC first
1 server trying to promote as dc but cannot locate the domain

they are on LAN using router

A little more info might be good.

What is the exact error they get? Is the other DC running 2003 as well? Is it running DNS? Is the new server pointing to the existing DC for DNS?

I am promoting a second dc both win2003 on the same lan
router 192.168.2.xxx NIC has no firewall enabled but i cannot dcpromo i can ping and the 2nd computer already belong to the domain but when i run dcpromo the error is it cannot contact the domain controller that i am trying to connect.

What is the IP address of the existing domain controller?

Is the new server configured with that IP address as its primary DNS server?

How did you ping server1 from server2? Did you ping by FQDN (server1.domain.com)?

You still haven't told me if 105 is configured to use 104 as it's primary DNS server.

I'm talking about basic TCP/IP configuration here.

Start, control panel, network connections, right click on local area connection, properties, double click on tcp/ip, make sure "use the following DNS server addresses" is marked, and then enter the IP of server in the primary DNS box.

Leave the secondary blank.

DNS is the building block of Active Directory. Without proper name resolution, AD will never work. Rather jumping into something over your head, I suggest researching and learning about the product, either with one of the hundreds of AD books, or with information online. Microsoft.com is an excellent resource.
