I have a weird PC problem. I can not copy or move files between folders. There is no error message, I can click the menu or drag the mouse(to copy/move) but nothing
happens after my move.
I did a virus check and it is OK, I can go to dos mode and do
copy so I think hardware must be OK. I really hate to re-intsall windows 98 so I am just using dos mode a lot. Any idea/suggestion? Thanks!

Anne

If you right click on the file and do a copy then go to the folder, right click and do a past, that does not work? James Collins

Thank you James for responding so quickly! Yes, I tried this method too but did not work. Anne

I bought a brand new PC(Pentium III) with Windows98 se installed on 11/24/2000 from a local computer store. At the beginning of February this year, suddenly I can not copy/move files between folders. I paid money to that store to run Virus check and it was OK. I did not install anything new to my PC during that time (all softwares I installed are old and ok in my old PC).
Based on my daily journl, I did install and uninstall several of free ISP softwares. ( I don't use free ones any more!) :
1/31/2001 uninstalled Costco software
2/1/2001 uninstalled Bluelight software
2/5/2001 COPY/MOVE do not work!!!
Anne

Try this. Control panel--internet options--security tab--custom level button--see if "drag and drop or copy and paste" is enabled. if not enable it and ok out.

If you haven't got it yet:

Open Notepad and copy and paste the following between the lines and save the file as cutpastefix.reg. Double-click on the file to merge the contents into the registry.

I checked and copy/move/drag/drop is enabled.
I merged the cutpastefix.reg into the registry and tried again, still not working.

How about restoring registry to date that the function was working fine... eg. in Dos mode goto folder C:\Windows\Command and type scanreg /fix then restart computer. If the function is still not working then goto the same folder and type scanreg /restore then just pick a date to restore the registry to... January would be nice if you have that option.

No Joking!

Joe

After merging the file in the registry, did you restart your machine?

reghakr

reghakr, yes I did.
joe, tried scanreg/fix, not working. Cannot go back to right date (I don't know the exactly date).

Scanreg/fix should repair the registry.
Scanreg/restore will ask for a date to restore from.

What is the message you receive?

reghakr

There are several dates for me to pick all are recent dates.
scanreg/fix finished with "it is fixed" kind of simple msg.

Anne,
Go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Add/Remove Programs, scroll down until you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 & Internet Tools, click the Add/Remove button and select repair.

If that doesn't work:
open Notepad and copy and paste the following between the lines and save the file as dragdrop.reg. Double-click on the file to merge the contents into the registry.

reghakr,

I don't use Microsoft Internet Explorer. I use Netscape 6.
One more clue, I can Drag/Drop files from regular folder to Recycle Bin and Briefcase. If I don't use DOS command, I just create a Briefcase and rename to anything I like. Anne

reghakr,

1. I don't see IE 5 & Tools.
2. I checked the registry and found those lines which are exactly same as your script.

Noticed this thread.

From another forum member cured problem by replacing ole32.dll.

A search on 'drag'n drop' problems points at either ole32.dll
or
this key...HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDEADF00-C265-11d0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\ShellFolder
See if the Attributes value is a8400000. If not, change it to this value.

Good Luck

Hi smiteee,
Thanks for your help!
I can not find this line:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{BDEADF00-C265-11d0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\ShellFolder
but find the following line:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{BDEADF00-C265-11d0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\ShellFolder]
"Attributes"=dword:a8400000

How do I get a new ole32.dll?

Hello, Anature.

Extract a fresh copy of ole32.dll from your installation cdrom package to replace the existing one in c:\windows\system.

::------replace--- ole32dll.bat------
c:
cd c:\windows\system
ren ole32.dll ole32.old
cd c:\windows\command
Extract /A X:\win98\win98_22.cab /L c:\windows\system ole32.dll
::-------end------ole32dll.bat--------

The colored line is in one single line. Edit the letter X for your CDRom drive letter.

tsuji, Thanks!
I can't access CD-ROM drive from MS-DOS Mode and I am thinking maybe I can use SFC to extract this file. So.... I'm burried in the "Microsoft Knowledge Base" now.
