Hi

I am getting the error:

Cannot Copy FILE: The specified network name is no longer available.

I have done a few registry key fixes but nothing has worked for me yet, I have trawled google and the microsoft site and unfortunately haven't had any luck

The error occurs on two PC's when I try and copy large files (50MB upwards) to a mapped drive on a 2003 server

I just wondered if anyone knows what might fix this?

I read somewhere that it might be something to do with collisions

Thanks

Jamie

It is an SMB signing isssue.

If both the 2003 server has all updates, and XP is at the Service Pack 2 level, this should not be an issue.

If you chose not to go to SP2, there are client-side modifications to SMB signing behavior that can help:

And use Group Policy on the server:

Hi

Thanks for the reply, the Windows 2003 Server has had no updates and isn't a DC, the workstations are bog standard XP SP1 machines

I think that my company is reluctant to upgrade to SP2 on the workstationsbut might consider it on the 2003 server, would that help?

I checked the SMB issues and the values are set to 0 for the SMB signing, something that i should have mentioned is that the files get copied intermittently but most of the time fail with the above error

Also as part of the issue the mapped drive (\\Server\Share)intermittently fails

Does it still point to SMB? if so would I need to suggest we add in the group policy on the DC's to my manager?

Regards

Thanks for the help, very much appreciated

Jamie

Hi

Sorry, I just saw the last thread, I will certainly give that a go

Thanks

Jamie

Check to make sure that the network cable and port are both good. I've had the same problem lately. Our network guy disabled Norton virus checking on my shares. Didn't take care of the problem. Same files copy ok from another machine (another thing to try if possible). Also, ping your server with at least 100 pings. Are you getting any time outs?

I fixed my problem by swapping the cable from another pc on my desk. Not a problem since.

Hi

Yes I did get 1 timeout out of a 100, I guess it would be wise to swap out the cable

Thanks

Jamie

Also have your network supportor help desk check the port on the hub/switch.

There might be an interesting story being told in the Event Viewer of the machines, have you looked in there?
