Hi, I have made my own RJ45 to DB9F rolled cable and tried connecting to the Console port of a Cisco 2502 router. I am using Hyperterminal and all the correct settings (9600,8,none,1,none). Nothing happens, what can I be doing wrong? The router could be defective, I don't know, but the OK LED on the back is on.

Is there for example any way I can reset the router without connecting to it? Or does anyone have another idea?

The cable should be fine, I checked the pin connections many times.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks

Thomas

Does this router have an aux port, if so try that one. Should default to same settings.

The router is fine.

Every time I hear the "Im not using a Cisco rolled cable, I made my own" comment....a red flag pops up.

Either the cable is wrong, or the router's console settings have been changed. If you cant get any response out of the router with 9600-8-N-1-N (and you are 100% CONVINCED it is NOT the cable), then try different settings. Are you doing this from a Win2000 box? I find that I have to sometimes reboot my Win2000 server before I try consoling in to a Cisco device for some reason.

You can sure reset the router without consoling in. Not sure what you mean by the word "reset", but if you know any of the IP addresses (and passwords for that matter) you can probably telnet into the router. If your looking to "reset" the power, unplug it and plug it back in.

Just tried the AUX port. No luck there. Thanks anyway routerman.

IllegalOperation, I can understand that the homemade cable is the first thing to think of. I am very sure that I have assembled it correctly, since it is very easy to put together. But you never know, so I'll try it on another router next week. I am using WinXP Pro.

I got the router from my workplace and it hasn't been used for a long time, so I have no passwords. Telnet also isn't impossible since it is a Token Ring Router and I have no Token Ring NIC.

By reset I meant clear the NVRAM to factory defaults.

Somtimes when I turn it on there is a high pitched tone and it doesn't sound like the fan is running. Then I turn it off and on again and the fan is running. Maybe just because the fan is worn out.

It was the cable, sorry. It works fine now.

Thomas.
