Cannot connect to network printer

On a Novell 5.1 network, I am attempting to connect to a network printer (controlled access). The user has rights to the printer but no matter what I try I get the error message "Windows cannot connect to printer. The network address is invalid."
The workstation is a laptop with XP Pro. I can connect to the printer from other workstations.

Any suggestions?

I would compare your Network/Protocol configuration with a known good machine. Are you using TCP/IP, IPX/SPX or both?

TCP/IP Only. Maybe uninstall TCP/IP and reinstall???

I doubt it. If you can ping your loopback address (127.0.0.1) or another device on the network, your TCP/IP is probably working fine. Speaking of pinging - can you ping the printer, or is it directly connected to a server through LPT?

Ping works fine both loopback and the printer. It is a standalone printer connected to the network via a jet direct card.

I haven't worked with Novell in quite some time, but it sounds like your access rights are the problem. Have you tried removing the access for that computer and re-adding it?

Do you have the printer set up in NDPS? Is the printer object in NDS/EDIR? Is the printer object and the User object in the same container?
All these can play a role in the problem you are seeing. If the printer is controlled access check the users rights. You could try connecting directly to the IP address of the printer using the Standard TCP/IP Port and see if that works, that would eliminate any IP related problems.
Have you run Jet Admin to see if the printer is setup correctly?

It's definitely something with the particular workstation. I can add others to the printer with no problem. This end user is a real airhead so there's no telling what she's done to the computer.
