Cannot Access Exchange Server Via VPN

I have a problem accessing or mapping to our Exchange server when connected via VPN. I can ping to it by IP or by name and I can access or map every other machines on the network with no problems including our application server and printers, but I cannot use our email system.
This is driving me nuts. Any Ideas?

Yes, no problems with that. Exchange is working fine with local and dial-up access.

I can telnet with no problems as long as I'm signed on locally but I cannot telnet to the smtp when using VPN.

Sounds like something in the VPN routing table that is messing with port 25. Do a route print with and without VPN connection active and see whats difference.

Alex, they're completely different. My problem is I can't even map to or find the Exchange server on the network while in VPN. There is also onther machine on the network that I'm having the same exact problem with, and this is our OWA server. They're both running NT 4.0 sp6a. All other machines are just file including our primary and backup domain controllers.

Wait, in your first post you said you could ping the Exchange server by IP and name.

When you are connected to the network via a hard wired connection you have no problems. Then you disconnect the LAN cable, get another internet connection (dial-up or whatever) and fire up the VPN software.

At this point (same login, same everything) you have access to some of the network, but not the Exchange server? What is the LAN end of your VPN (hardware router, MS RRAS server, softWAN server, etc?)

If you have NO ping or name resolution to the exchange server, but access to the rest of the network, check the VPN host, can you login locally to this and ping the Exchange server? If yes, use a packet sniffer on the LAN inside the VPN host and see if the VPN Exchange traffic is getting routed through.

Alex, while connected via VPN, I can ping the Exchange server by ip or by name, but cannot map or access any of the drives. Every time I rty to I get "The computer or share name could not be found".
We're using a Cisco 1700 router with Cisco client software.
All other PC on the network work just fine.
