Can you move MDBDATA in Exchange 2003??? 1

When we set up Exchange 2k3 we thought we were configuring it to have transaction logs and Exchange data dumped on a network drive (T. Recently we started to run low on disk space so we investigated and found that the transactions logs are being pumped out on the network at T:\MDBDATA however there is still a directory at C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA that has almost 8 GB in it. There are definitely transaction logs at T:\MDBDATA but I think the .edb and .stm files that are in Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA should be moved out to the T: drive as well.

Any ideas on why those files were not moved out there or what I can do to correct this? Thanks in advance.

I would buy some hard drives, putting exchange logs and database on a network drive is not supported and will cause you no end of problems. Iscsi drives are supported though.

I am presuming it is just a mapped drive to a share somewhere.


As for moving the location of the Exchange database, Try the following article.

Thanks a bunch!!! That is exactly what I'm looking for. To clarify, It's not exactly a network drive. We have a our Exchange server connected to a SAN via a fiber channel. So it's not exactly a mapped network drive.

We have 5 drives in the server. One for OS. Then the other four drives create a mirrored set for our transaction logs (T. We then have the server connected to a SAN for for the databases. Well, our databases never made it to the SAN.

Is there anything I need to know that Micro$oft doesn't mention in that knowledgebase article before I make the switch?

It is service affecting so don't do it during the day
Who's San are you using, we are using the Netapp kit over Iscsi and replicating the data to a remote DR site. All in one box, its pretty cool.

We have a Compaq Modular SAN Array 1000. All of our servers are connected via fiber channel to redundant fiber controllers. A majority of our servers dump on a 500GB array but we have an array specifically for the Exchange data that we thought the database was on....oops. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction for that KB article.....now i've got something to do this weekend...yippee!!
