Is there anyway to boot to DOS on XP?

not really, unless you set up a dual-boot configuration with DOS (boot to one or the other).

XP is based on NT technology, so while it does have a command prompt similar to dos, it is not the same and you cant really boot directly to it.

can i ask what you are trying to accomplish? there may be another way around this.

I am trying to use an old game that worked with win95, but used DOS 5.0(I think). I used to boot to dos and then start the game from a command line. Does not work under XP. I guess I could look for a machine that still had 98 and try running there....

Hi,
Odd, I have several old DOS games ( Sierra's Older DOS Solitaire and a MsPacMan DOS version.) running quite happily under XP's CMD with graphics, sound etc.I did not do anything special to use them, just made a desktop shortcut to the relevant com or exe or bat file.

Must be game specific ( and memory issues -like needing Expanded or Extended ) - or dumb luck [smile].

in your windows xp for the games you are trying to run try using the compatibility wizard and run the games in compatibility mobe for win 95 they will work just fine. Have to do this with some of the kids educational win95 games. Just right click the file and choose properties then click on the compatibility tab and choose whichever mode you need to run it in. Usually works for me, good luck.

Dos Box 0.61 ... also you want to get Boxer with that... its a front end for setting up the dos box

It emulates dos in win32... including soundblaster emulation... worked good... you can mount directories as drives (including mounting a dir as an emulated cdrom)... i run System Shock (circa 1993) in it with no probs

nice post shmoes - i didnt know that existed. thanks.

If you get to the DOS prompt. Go to run and type in command not cmd, command will open up the DOS window and not CMD windows. There is a difference.
