Can w/2000 native backup read tape from another server and restore

Using Windows Server 2000 native backup I would like to be able to restore a folder from a tape from another server that is unavailable right now, namely an NT Server 4.0. Is this even possible. When I open up the restore tab all I see are the prior backup jobs completed by that Server/tape drive as if the restore could only be done using one of those choices, not the tape from the other NT 4.0 server that is in the tape drive now.

You need to catalog the tape first and then you should be able to do it.

I have a similar problem. Our server died and I had to reinstall Windows 2000 from scratch.

NTBackUp does not appear to allow me to catalogue "new tapes", the media option under tools is grayed out. These tapes are the backups I made before windows died.

I have tried to force it to catalogue by selecting one of the previous backups and using the wrong tape but it just gives me an error.

How do I use NTBackup to read the contents of a tape that the server has never seen before? or is there something else that I can use to extract the data from the tape and restore it again.

I don't have a tape in my home pc to work from here, but as I recall you need to right click my computer, choose manage. Go to Removable Storage. Then under Unrecognized media, right click and choose catalog.
