For some reason I thought I read somewhere that Exchange Server (2000/2003?) could be configured to use SQL Server as the back end database instead of the Exchange database. Of course, I can't find anything about it on the web, so I assume it's not possible, but thought I'd check with the experts here on Tek-Tips!

Well, the Exchange Information Stores are essentially Microsoft Jet (SQLServer/Access) databases, but I woudl expect they are optimized for Exchange and have some unique features.

Nope. Exchange uses a derivative of JET (though optimized from something simple, like MS Access. Not quite the same as SQL). There were thoughts about changing the back-end for Exchange with 2003 and with the next release, but both were decided against by Microsoft.
