Hi folks
i tried to fdisk a friends computer(dell optiplex) with a boot disk, it would lock-up right after the screen for the large h/d support.
i had to partition and format with the cd..I'm just use to doing it a certain way an it wouldn't let me, can anyone tell me why? the computer is done. now i'm just curious...

THANKS
note: i used a 98 boot disk, installing 2k.i've done it this way dozens of times, partition with bootdisk then format with cd,never a problem till yesterday..

Something wrong with hardware (even floppy drive?) in machine?

btw - why on earth do you waste time booting from 98 boot floppy when 2k has partitioning/formatting tools built in to install process? Presume you never use NTFS filestore either.

thanks for reply wolluf
sure i use nt file sys,it doesn't make sense not to when useing 2k or xp.I just never started with cd.I always use a boot disk to partition(old habits die hard:)The problem with this dell was the h/d needed to be on cable select, why? i don't know. but this computer had 2 h/d's and i was able to partition and format from a floppy #2 h/d with #1 h/d disconnected..
do they make cable select only ribbons?

again wolluf THANKS for your reply

Just to support your habit.

Remember not all systems can boot from a cd.

afaik there's no such thing as a cable select IDE cable - the behaviour of the drives should be determined by their jumpers (and position on the ATA66+ 80 wire cables).
