I have tried to set up a wireless connection on my laptop. I am able to ping IP addresses from the laptop but am unable to use Internet Explorer to display the sites.

On the same network, connected to the same wireless router (SMC 7004VWBR) is a desktop. I am able to succesfully both ping IP addresses and connect to web pages from the desktop.

For example, I am able to both ping the IP address 192.168.2.1 and connect to the router configuration page by putting in in Internet Explorer on the desktop. However, on the laptop, while I am able to ping the IP address 192.168.2.1, when I put in in Internet Explorer, I get a "Page cannot be displayed" error.

I can connect inside the home network without any problems from the laptop - I am able to see my shared folders on the desktop from the laptop without any trouble.

Please help, as this has been driving me crazy! Have spent hours with SMC tech support and am not getting anywhere.

Regards,

Sankaran

Can you ping Internet names? IF not, from the laptop, run the command IPCONFIG /ALL and see what your DNS server is. Do the same from the Workstation. Do they match? If not, enter the laptop info statically.
The problem of not being able to connect to is very strange. That sounds more like an IE problem. Check your IE connection settings.
Are both machines the same OS? And have the same Wireless software and/or brand of cards?

Matt,

I have set the DNS servers - both primary and secondary - on the laptop to be the same as the desktop. I have also checked IE settings between the two - they are the same. The laptop is on XP Professional while the desktop is on XP Home.

While I am using the SMC2635W wireless PCMCIA card on the laptop, I have an ethernet card (came built in with the Compaq desktop) on the desktop which I am directly hooking into the SMC7004VWBR wireless router.

I took yahoo.com as an example.

On the desktop,

I am able to ping 66.218.71.198 successfully
I am able to ping yahoo.com successfully
I am able to go to yahoo.com in IE.

On the laptop,

I am able to ping 66.218.71.198 successfully
I cannot ping yahoo.com successfully
I cannot go to yahoo.com in IE.

Thanks for your pointers,

Sankaran

Well, from that it definately looks like DNS. If you type the ip 66.218.71.198 into the browser, just as you see it, do you get a Yahoo page not found error?

You may have DNS issue. try this nslookup command to troubleshoot it. if you get can' find server or time out, focus on DNS troubleshooting. I don't believe this is your IPS DNS issue. it is the laptop settings problem. For more tips or information, go to

Matt, Robert,

Thank you both for your responses. I have tried typing in into IE and I get the Yahoo page not found error.

Another thing that I tried is to use VPN to connect to my office network. The VPN connection goes through fine. I am able to ping multiple UNIX servers on the office network. I am also able to ping my own office desktop on the office network. However, when I try to telnet into any of the UNIX servers or try to Remote Desktop into my office desktop, I am unable to.

As Robert has suggested, I believe there may be something with my laptop settings. However, I have no clue as to what it could be. I will check out the page.

Another thing that installing the wireless driver does is to mess up my normal ethernet adapter on the laptop. Once I install the wireless driver, and face these problems, I am unable to use my ethernet adapter. The only option is to use XP's System Restore feature and go back to a point prior to the wireless driver install. The ethernet adapter starts working fine on the laptop.

OK, now we're getting somewhere. If you got the Yahoo page, it is most definately a DNS and/or TCP/IP issue(due to remark about Enet card).
It's not ISP DNS since the Desktop is fine, and I assume the laptop is also fine with the "Old" NIC.
Once the Wireless is installed, do you see the other NIC in your Network Connections page? Have you tried setting the Wireless NIC with static IP's and DNS servers?

Thanks,
