This indicates a serious issue with your HOSTS file, and likely more.

Look first to the HOSTS file in c:\windows\system32\etc
You can use Notepad to open the file.

It should look like this:
Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

If it does not, copy and paste the above as a new file called HOSTS (no file extension).

Reboot and see if things improve.

It is possible you have been hit with qhosts:

Thanks a lot for your response I did bcastner and chris. Actually I have done both but to no avail. Norton did found 5 viruses and deleted it but it did not fixed the problem. I will be doing now is to find out if there's really a qhost virus...Thanks again..

can you surf the net with ip addresses not names? if you can the problem is with the DNS server.
Leon

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, make sure none of the boxes are checked.

Did surf using ip just the same, did sypbot, adaware , highjackthis nothing found...Sisoft Sandra cannot run winsock info or network info...it dont go through...but the microsoft Network Diagnostic (Support Tools)says passed

If none of the above is working for you then you should seriously consider performing a In-place upgrade (Repair) installation of windows xp. See :
This will allow you to reinstal the important o/s files but will not lose your settings.
