Can ping and nslookup from linux console , but not Windows or browser

Hi folx

I created subdomain2.mydomain.com using Webmin, it takes the form:

subdomain2.mydomain.com. IN A ip.of.the.server

From any linux server on the local network, I can ping and nslookup the new subdomain as expected.

However, when I point any browser to the new subdomain, it tells me there is dns problem as it can not be found. Apache is already setup to serve pages for this virtual host.

From the Windows console I get the following:

Ping:
Ping request could not find host subdomain2.mydomain.com. Please check the name and try again.

Nslookup:
From any windows pc on the local network, I get:
*** dns.cache.server.of.isp can't find subdomain2.mydomain.com: Non-existent domain

Where have I gone wrong?

which dns server are your linux boxes pointed (I'll bet hey use the one that has webmin.) If a DNS server thinks it is auth, it gives an answer. If your windows boxes are just using your ISP as DNS, then the domain must be correctly registered on the INTERNET and accessible.

You totally nailed it.

I made the assumption that the Windows machines were pointing to the local DNS server, but they were not.

This is a small network. The subdomains are defined as:

subdomain1.mydomain.com. IN A ip.of.the.server
subdomain2.mydomain.com. IN A ip.of.the.server

There is one server hosting the different services that are configured to run from these two subdomains, even though in reality they come from the same server.

With this in mind, How am I supposed to register the new subdomain on the internet?
