Can not resolve Host Names but can IP's....

I am having what obviously should be a DNS problem with my computer. I can not resolve host names but I can ping IP's and get to sites via their IP. If I connect to my works VPN (through the IP) then I am able to browse the net. Any suggestions?


I am using DSL and everything is configured correctly in the router and modem. I just tried another machine and it works great. Something is up with the machine.

Have you always had this problem, or is it something new? If it's new, what's changed? Just need a little more info. Good luck.

Just started 2 weeks ago. I have not changed anything. My wife also uses the machine and she is saying the same but you never know. Sorry there is not much more information to give. I connected another laptop and it worked fine.

I was suprised to see that 10.10.1.248 came back with the nslookup. Can we change that to something else? Like the DNS of my ISP. Changing the DNS on the nic does not work though

Ok, obviously you cannot contact the DNS server 10.10.1.248. Post an "ipconfig /all" output for further analysis so we can see what you current config looks like.

Have you checked the log files for errors? How about checking for viruses? You should always start with the basics when something that worked stops. Something has had to change, especially if another laptop works. Good luck.

Thanks Glen but man I have tried everything. Nothing is showing up in the log files, all virus and spyware scans turn up nothing, and no new software was installed. Thought my wife does use this too. Below is an ipconfig /all.

Today I removed the machine from the Domain and it stopped looking for the internal DNS server at work and picked it up from the ISP.

I would still like to know a solution to this problem other then the one I found.

could try adding a dns suffix search list to the connections tcp/ip properties in advanced\DNS tab...I would list your internal office first

i would suspect the router/ gateway to the internet , i noticed that the dns ip is from a local device on your network and would look at the config of that device - ie is it pulling the dns from your isp correctly and is it blocking the dns to that pcs hostname or ip address ?

Add the beast back to the domain and see what happens. You didn't find a solution to the problem, just a fix to the symptom. Look for a hosts file on the beast. I've seen anti-virus software create host files to re-direct ip's not wanted. Just a thought.
