I recently did a upgrade on SPYWARE DOCTOR and after it finished installing and the inital scan was done, I could no longer get connected to the internet.

I have attempted both a IPCONFIG /Renew and a repair on the devices. both come back with unable to refresh the ip address.

I have check that the connection is set to auto get and that the services are running. Still not able to get an ip address.

I then removed the drives and also uninstall the network card. re-booted to have window reinstall and still not able to get an IP Adress.

Anybody have any thoughts? The message I am getting is limited or no conectivity.

Thanks

Have you tried uninstalling SPYWARE DOCTOR?

How do you connect to the internet, is it via a router?

You also say that you "removed the drives" - Which drives are you talking about?

I have uninstalled SPYWARE DOCTOR.

My Connection is via a router, but other computers attached to this have no issues not even the wireless. So my connection to the internet is no an issue.

Sorry meant the network drivers....

What other security software is running?

Have you tried winsockfix?

If you set a static ip address in the right range (with router ip as gateway) does that give you any network access?

If you are running on XPsp2 then you can open a command box and type in:
netsh winsock reset [ENTER]
When done successfully you will be prompted to restart your computer. Close the command box by typing exit [ENTER] then restart and try it again...

The test continues...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I had to use the "winsockfix" to get this back up and working. Seems that the intial scan with SPYWARE Doctor flages some of the registery enties as bad and deleted them.

The 'winsockfix' utility rest those entries and i was able to get connected.

Seems quite a few other entries were flagged as bad also since it knocked me back to looking like only on SP1.

Thanks again for all the help

Ever since I got my laptop (Sony / Windows XP sp2), I've been unable to use the ethernet port.

I can get onto the internet using wireless or the ethernet port in the Sony Dock I bought with the laptop.

The symptoms and error messages when I plug directly into the laptop ethernet port are consistent with this thread.

I've uninstalled the "Trend Spyware" software that came with the computer, then again followed your collective leads to the "T".

To my layman's logic, it seems that if I can get onto the net through the Dock, then the problem with the built-in ethernet port must be hardware, not software configuration.

Thoughts?

Thanks, John

John,

Does the Sony laptop's built-in NIC show in 'Device Manager'? (and, if so, are there any warning or error icons against it?)

In 'Device Manager', can you double-click on the onboard NIC to get its 'Properties' up then check that the speed and duplex is set to 'Auto'.

Also in the onboard NIC's 'Properties', check whether there is a 'Power Management' tab and, if so, remove any tick against 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' checkbox (just in case it's failing to come out of a 'suspend mode').

In 'Network Connection', check that the onboard NIC shows in the 'LAN or High-speed Internet' area (i.e. not 'Bridged') and that it is enabled but not firewalled.

Next, right-click on the onboard NIC in 'Network Connections' and check/confirm that its settings re: Firewall, Client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/IP are the same as your working connections.

Next, right-click on the onboard NIC in 'Network Connections' again and select 'Repair'. Try connecting the Internet again.

If you are still unsuccessful then are you using Internet Explorer 7? If so then have you tried IE7's 'Diagnose Connection Problems' utility in the 'Tools' menu (or just run 'C:\WINDOWS\network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe'). This utility will try to connect to the internet and will create a report as C:\Windows\network diagnostic\xpnetdiag.xml and display the results automatically.

Hope this helps...
