I am getting an error message when I try to delete a file in the recycle bin in XPpro Desktop.

the message is

Error Deleting File or Folder

Cannot delete Dc315: It is being used by another person or program.

Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

I have done a chkdsk /f

What I really want to do is a command line deletion of the recycle bin but I can not seem to find the path.

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried from Safe Mode?

How the Recycle Bin Stores Files (Q136517)

Cannot Empty Recycle Bin or Modify Recycle Bin Properties

Cannot Delete Any Files in Windows

Do you have Norton protecting files in my recycle bin? Norton will not allowing you to delete a specific file if the original path from where that file came from was deleted. Turn off Norton protection on the recycle bin and try that.

Hi I took your suggestion about safe mode, no luck there.

I am not getting the how to use the posts about earlier versions of windows to fix my problem with XPpro.

The older MSKB articles still have some use even in Vista, the only difference is that the hidden and system "Recycler" file was called "Recycled" in earlier systems, but the method is the same.

The Recycled folder itself can become damaged. Files are moved to the folder and the Recycle Bin on the desktop appears full but you cannot view the contents and the Empty The Recycle Bin command may be unavailable, or simply doesn't work.

Deleting the Recycle Bin and then restarting Windows, which will re-create and restore its functionality. Restart the computer and delete the recycle bin by pressing F8 at the WinXP Startup menu, and then select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Navigate to the correct drive prompt (ie C or D). Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

attrib -s -h recycler
del recycler

You could also try deleting the Recycler folder from the Recovery Console.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

It will help if you have both hidden and system files set to be visible via Folder Options/ View.

You may need to use a program such as Killbox to get the file deleted...

Killbox

is that DC315 file perhaps part of the drivers for a SCSI card that you have installed?

then you may need to take ownership of the said file before you can delete it... and deinstall the driver for the scsi card...
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

also, I would suggest that you do a complete Malware scan aswell as an AntiViral scan before hand...

Thank you Linney and BadBigBen

Both your responses were helpful, At best I can determine, I somehow cross-linked files, I have alot of space on my hard drive, so not sure why it happened. I have been able to make the files go away slowly. They all would not delete in one click. I was able to delete them 1 or 2 at a go. The reason I think that there is some kind of cross linked file name issue is that the files in the recycle bin have one name and the error message has refers to a different name.

I am not sure where the cross linking issue came about because these files were on another machine which got its Windows 2000 OS trashed by a third party undelete program. I was copying directories off the computer over my network, running CD boot Linux to access the hard drives to move my data. I needed to delete some files. What is strange is that all the files that caused problems were Adobe Illustrator files.

Mentions this in respect of name changes, is this what you are commenting on?

"MORE INFORMATION
Each hard disk contains a hidden folder named Recycled (Recycler in XP). This folder contains files deleted in Windows Explorer or My Computer, or in Windows- based programs.

When you delete a file, the complete path and file name is stored in a hidden file called Info or Info2 (Windows 98) in the Recycled folder. The deleted file is renamed, using the following syntax:

D<original drive letter of file><#>.<original extension>
Examples:
New file name:

Dc1.txt = (C drive, second file deleted, a .txt file)

INFO file path:

C:\Windows\Desktop\Books.txt

New file name:

De7.doc = (E drive, eighth file deleted, a .doc file)

INFO file path:

E:\Winword\Letter to Rosemary.doc "

Yes this is exactly what is coming up. So no I do not have a cross linked files, Dc452 is the info from the info file in the recycler directory.

Ok in XP; does the recycler folder have an info file? and is it called info or something else? We are looking at a help post for win98 or NT4.0 and need to be clear about how it is done in XP. Also a dumb question, if I deleted the recycler directory, from safe mode, and command prompt, why hasn't these vampire files gone away, per your instructions? They just don't go away and die.

Thanks for making the extra effort

Hi,

It may be worth deleting these files from DOS if this hasnt been tried yet.

To do this.

1. In the run box enter "cmd" and hit return
2. Change to the c:\ drive
3. Change to the hidden folder recycler (cd recycler)
4. Now use the attrib command to change the flags on hidden files. (attib -h -r *.*)
5. Now try to delete from the command prompt "del."

If aint broken, dont try n fix it!!!!!

yeh, they are all deleted finally.

Thanks all for the assistance. Going to delete the recycler folder one more time, hope that will cause a new info file to be created, now that the recycler directory is empty.

Just some more information on Inf02 files.

INFO2 is a hidden file that holds the information on files in the Recycle Bin.

From a Command Prompt,

Type CD \RECYCLED, and then press ENTER.
Type ATTRIB -r -s -h info2, and then press ENTER.

See this article.
