What I meant was that ideally the MDF and LDF files should be on individual hard drives as well. As for my original (possibly hasty) statement err well...)
In Oracle the ideal disk plan involves 27 hard disks if I recall correctly.

SQL 2000 BOL states, "The path in os_file_name must specify a directory on an instance of SQL Server."
SQL 7 BOL states, "The path in os_file_name must specify a directory on the server in which SQL Server is installed."
This indicates that the data and logs must be on local drives. However, I've just read a FAQ by Neil Pike and a knowledgebase article that indicates that you can create databases on Netork drives. However, this is not recommended primarily because data integrity can be compromised and performance will be poor.
