can I use my computer mic like tape recorder, if so what program can I use to record long periods of time. I just need to record audio for up to 1 hour segments

Yes, this is possible though I think a 1 hour long recording would fill your hard drive.

Software to use would totally depend on what hardware you have. Most sound cards ship with utilities that can handle it.

there is a program called yogen audio recorder that works great. Has the option of a sound activated recorder as well. To activate it cost around $20 but have fo9und it very much worth the money
