Hi all;
I'm a newbie to the entire webserver realm, so I have a basic question for you folks. I just started running win2k server on Time Warner's Road Runner service(cable modem). I would like to house my website on my own server to run streaming video and other apps. I have a domain name registered and currently hosted by the domain registry website, Directnic. I'd like to move away from them and host my own site(s) from now on. But, I can only use DHCP to get an IP--Time Warner wont give me a static IP address. Would it still be possible to run a webserver from my PC even though I have no permanent IP? Thank you!

You could but it would not be practical.

If you wanted to hit your web site by just ip address then you could host web site.

Whoever manages your domain name, not your web site, points the to a ip address. You can have them switch to whatever ip address your win2k server. However every time your ip address cahnges, you would have to mak a DNS change. Most ISP's charge for DNS cahnges.

You could try useing dynamic hosting with a third party directing your traffic to you even if your IP changes.You only ned to get your current host to change the redirect once then it can be done auto via software. I use dyndns.org to host my website on my own server. Go to and have a look see if that would work for you.

Thanks all for the helpful answers. Another question based on this Dynamic DNS. Is it possible for me to set up a DDNS on win2K without having to pay a service to do it? Or is it a big undertaking. Should I leave it to the pros or set up my own DDNS? Thanx again guys!

Sign up at no-ip.com

They have alot of different "domain" names to choose from like yoursite.no-ip.com, yoursite.servehttp.com and my favorite yoursite.servebeer.com <-- no kidding. There's more there and the service is free. They even have a client that you install that automatically updates there service with your new ip everytime you turn on your computer, you can schedule it too I think. The even teach you how to get around it if your service blocks port 80, which the internet uses.

Hope this helps.

Aloha,

James
