Can I lock a selection in a multi select box?

I have a multi select box. Is there a way that I can 'lock' one item as permanantly selected (so the user can not de-select it)?

Implement an onchange() handler, within which make sure that the index of the specific nth option (zero-based) be selected via the script line below before the handler returns its control to its caller.
[tt] document.formname.selectname.selectedIndex=n;[/tt]
