C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
and also
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\temporary internet files.

In win98se they were there in plain sight and could be deleted. In win xp pro they are hidden. Can i delete them and not damage my os or any programs?

thanks

From Internet Explorer, select [Tools] and then [Internet Options]. The [General] tab includes the option to delete temporary internet files. (Also 'cookies', if you choose, which is how sites you have visited know you have visited.)

This will clear down everything in Temp\temporary internet files that can safely go. I've never risked getting rid of the stuff that it won't touch.

As for Temp, go into the file, select [details] and then sort by size. Stuff that is large and old can go - at least I have done it without obvious error.

When virus / spyware scanning a PC the contents of those two folders along with the recycle bin are the first to go !!!!!!

Funny you should say that, i thought that as well.
However< i have updated and ran (few times):
Norton AV 2005
online web scan - computer associates
spybot S&D
stinger
hijack this
microsoft giant antispyware
now running adaware

Yes, i had or have some virii or malware.
My cpu was being used 100% and i was doing nothing. First i thought it was software i have installed, novabackup, and i still think it has something to do with it, but i have disabled it for now, doing manual backups til i get this fixed.
Then i ran Norton av, nothing.
Then online scan caught a few things:
win32 startpage downloader
java byte verify exploit
html webber z
win32 sillyDI.BL
win32 sillyDI.DQ

I had online webscan delete these.
Then later norton said it caught a trojan and deleted it, and this was from the files i mentioned, in temp, and temp inet folders. Thats why i am wondering if i can just delete them all.

in temporary internet files there is a folder called content IE5 and has more folders with numbers and all is dated dec 17 2004. I just deleted all of this in temp inet files.

But i havent deleted contents of temp file, waiting to see what others have to say.

I admit that i am a bittorrent user, and likely this is part of the problem.

Hi, install and run MS-AntiSpyware. Pick up "tracks eraser" from the tools menu/advanced tools, track eraser.

It will delete TEMP, temporary internet files as well as others temps (documents history, regedit history etc...)

I think this is the best way for you to go.

Hope this helps. Please let know if this resolve your issue

Jeff

I already have ms antispyware (formerly giant) but i will check the configuration.
Actually, i have started a new thread now and will let this one die. The reason is that the problem is now more system-wide. See my newer thread. I have some virus or malware taking over my computer, running cpu at 100% when im doing nothing.

Do me a favor, post in my newer thread and let this one die as i dont want to take over this whole area but i feel a new thread name is in order.

thanks
