Can I control Arcserve remotely from an NT WKSTN ?

I have Arcserve backing up a server in a freezing cold computer room. Can I put some sort of client on my desktop NT 4 Wk Stn to allow me to control backups / restores etc. remotely ? Then I'd just have to run in to change the tape instead of putting on three jumpers before going in for an extended period of time.

You can use timbuk2 or some other remote control device , however if you call computer asssociates for support dont tell them that you are using any remote control software. They will tell you it is not supported, and will most likely try to say that is the cause of your problem.

Just do a custom install from the CD onto your workstation and choose the ArcserveIT Manager. This is the same app as you use from your b/u server and you can manage jobs on all servers on your network. Good luck & stay warm!

Similiar situation, but my backup server is in the back of our warehouse at the far end of our manufacturing plant (as far from the main computer room as possible for disaster reasons). Using PCAnywhere saves me about 3 football fields worth of walking, except for the once or twice a week I have to go rotate tapes to/from the library.

A remote control app is your best option, but you can do it with a built in part of ArcServeIT, although I'm not real sure how ArcServe licensing would view this:

Install the AS Manager on your workstation, then from any of the main AS pieces (like Device Manager or Job Status) click on the icon of the little tower PC (I think it's supposed to be a server) all the way on the left of the button bar. You should be able to choose the server you want to administer.

I used this method for a while, but it can be frustrating sometimes. Example: Doesn't always show all of the tapes correctly, even after you do an inventory.

If you can talk someone into spending $200 go get a remote control app. Remember to get two licenses, one for the server and one for your workstation.

Try WinVNC from AT&T. A free remote control app that works great. You can even get the source for it if you want to modify it.

It can run as a service on win9x or NT/2000 (doesn't work with WinXP yet). It's a stateless server, so dropping the connection during a remote control session will not lock it up. Just reconnect and pick-up where you left off.

Caution with VNC, as it slows down heavily both the workstation AND SERVER!!! But it's a great program..

I use Symantec's pcAnywhere 9.0 and it works great! I install it on all my servers.
