Hello,

I got a W2000 server with Active Directory and DNS, and a domain on it.

Now I need to change the domain so I can get this server to be on the same domain that a NT 4.0

What do I need to do? Will it be possible

Thanks in advance

Carmelo

Is the NT4 machine the Domain Controller of the other Domain? James Collins

Hi James,

Yes the NT4 is the domain controller of the domain. I had to put another domain on the w2000 server so I could try an VPN. Now that it works, I need to change the domain so it will be under the domain of the NT4.
The domain is D_INFOPORT

I know I need Active Directory an DNS server on the w2000 so I can use a VPN server. That's why I put a domain on it (IPV02).

But now comes the change and don't know what to do

Thansk a lot for your time, waiting for any clue

Hi again James.

Will it be possible to uninstall the domain controller on the W2000 server and install a new one so this one can be under the domain controller of the NT 4.0
If so, what are the steps I need to take?

Thanks a lot again

Simply run DCPROMO on the win2k machine. It will take you through the steps you need to do and will uninstall AD and can also reintall it. Steve Hewitt

HI!

What you want is not so simple.

One option you have to remove AD (using DCPROMO), and then join the NT4 domain as a MEMBER SERVER, WITHOUT installing AD.
This is for my opinion the best way for you, until you wish to upgrade the domain to W2K AD.

For the VPN stuff, it can be implemented in the FireWall and not on the internal server.
And anyway I don't think that Active Directory is required for implementing VPN in 2000, it just gives you more option if you're in native mode, which is not suitable for your current network.

If you try to install AD to the same NT4 domain using DCPROMO, I think you'll have problems, because this means that you are trying to upgrade the domain to W2K and AD , and for this to be done you should have an NT4 PDC upgraded to 2000.
So I think this won't work and will give you some hard time.

There are other options but can be more complex and dificult to implement.

Bye
