Yes. A multitude of problems can show up above and beyond the fdisk and format. Timing and noise problems and bad sectors are three of the most prevalent. And boot sector virii give that type of problem.

If you have a failing hard drive try running some diagnostic software on it. You could try Powermax from Maxtor.
