can anyone tell me the advantage of the distibuted file system

what is its main value or purpose of the distributed fie system over just just creating network shares on the files server?

If you have multiple file servers, then you can use DFS to present a unified directory tree. Shoudl a server go down, you can remap the directory on another server and all client links continue to work.
