Can anybody please define what a handle is. I need a theoritical definition of what the term handle refers to as far as odbc is concerned.

I don't know how theoretical or detailed you want, but generically a handle is a pointer to a specific logical device, be it a file, a printer port, or some other thing.
In ODBC, a handle might represent a pointer to a connection to a data provider. Think of the handle as a simple way to refer to that connection.
