Can an Internal DNS server query External DNS server, same domain?

Here is the layout (domain.com sample domain of course):

--Internal DNS server--
mail.domain.com
intranet.domain.com

http://www.domain.com

test.domain.com

--External DNS server--
mail.domain.com

http://www.domain.com

external.domain.com

The question, if I have a user on the internal network query for external.domain.com the internal server doesn't find it because it's not listed on itself. I would like to have the internal DNS server search it's files for external.domain.com, find that it has the domain.com domain but not the subdomain, search a secondary or external DNS server to try to resolve it.

Is that possible?

I hate split dns. Your internal domain name should be domain.loc and your external domain.com

Yeah I'm not a big fan of it either but is it possible to do this?

Can't you just setup a forward of the subdomain on the internal to the external? It is a distinct domain so it should work.

Yeah that's what we are doing. However we are trying to avoid having to enter that information in two places. If the internal server can just query the external server for subdomains not in it's list then we wouldn't have to enter the information in twice.

put an NS record in for external.domain.com and point it to an A record for the external DNS server.


EX:
ns1.externalDNS.com A whaterver the IP is of the outside DNS

the NS record:
external.domain.com NS ns1.externalDNS.COM

DNS requires this, and considers it a "handoff" lookup so when it reaches the new DNS server, it will treat it as a proper DNS lookup.
