Can AMD 1.7 Ghz Replace a 700mhz Processor?

Yeah just wondering If i can replace my 700mhz AMD with a 1.7Ghz.
Now my model of Motherboard is: Asus K7M Slot A Motherboard
Specs are 200mhz Front Side Bus
UltraDMA/66

Now Ive been loking at the Processors & they mention Socket A. Is that the same as Slot A. In the Motherboard manual it says it can support any processor with a Slot A.
If I can upgrade what will I have to do? Any Flash Bios Upgrades etc?

I dont believe it will work if i am right i believe your that board will only work up to 1ghz.So if you are wanting to uprade you will have to purchase a new board.

If you want you can find a relativitly good motherboard just check around even try the auction site (if you do as always on auctions be carefull what you buy and who from)but even a good motherboard should run you around $80.00-$100.00.I have not looked but im sure you can find them cheaper.

Yeah i know I can get a Motherboard & 1.7ghz AMD processor for $A430-$500 ( Im Australian) I belive that is about $210 to $250in US Dollars.

Sorry Mate! I am pretty sure Slot A Athlons only went up to 750mhz, then they brought out the socketed Athlons.
(slot Athlons came as a BLACK CARTRIDGE and pushed into the CPU slot at right angles) much like an upgrade PCI slot, where as a Socket Athlon comes as a bare processor and fits flush/flat with the motherboard in a Socket A Molex connector and then has a seperate heatsink/fan mounted onto it.
Both are completely differant!
What you also have to know is the XP1700+ (1.47mhz)is a DDR processor and will benefit most by being in a DDR motherboard with DDR memory, although there are boards that will support your old SDram with the XP chip you will be holding back the processors full potential by using it.
My father has the same problem as you, he has the Slot A 750 Athlon and like you he will have to buy at least a motherboard and processor to upgrade next time around.
