can active directory be used on two win2k servers on the same domain

hi all, here i go again

I have one computer with windows2000 server with sp2 and it is running active directory. I have configured a second computer with windows2000 server with sp2 and it is configured to logon to the same domain. I want to be able to run exchange2000 on the second computer but I can’t because it needs active directory. How can I tell this second computer to use the active directory of the first computer because it is already installed and configured, and ofcourse it is also the domain controller.

Im not positive but I think that You need to set up the second computer as an alternate DNS server and the active directory will then be available. Im a little new to win 2000 server so if anyone else has anything to add on, please do.

You need to install AD on second server and have it join the same domain as the first. just run dcpromo.exe and follow the prompts

i have the same setup you are trying to do.

one w2k server, holding AD, DNS, DHCP.
I installed a second w2k server, ran dcpromo, added it to the domain, the AD sync'd and then i installed Exchange2k.

should work the same for you.
make sure you install the nimba patches on the mail server you will be setting up. OWA installs and turns on IIS. I also believe you have to have NNTP installed on the box before you can install Exchange.

Also look into the ForestPrep tools before you install Exchange. Exchange 2k adds lots of changes to the Schema.

you dont need to install active directory on the exchange server just join the server to the domain and then when you run exchange setup it should detect the active directory. If for some reason it does not detect the domain controller you may have to install the active directory connector beforehand.

well, i guess you read the above info, so you already know the setup. w2k server, AD, DNS, DHCP.

second one. Also, AD, with E2K. I would like to get the AD off the box and make the server a member server. Is this possible. Will i have to install exchange again? I wasn't aware of the capiblities of the active directory connector. i was under the assumption that it was connect 5.5 to AD.

Active Directory Connector is used to connect Exchange 5.5 to active directory. It's not needed in this case.

If you run DCPROMO again, you can make your domain controller a member server. If you're doing this on the first machine you created in the domain, you will want to transfer some FSMO roles first (If it's not the first machine you created, don't worry about that).

Here are some general summary notes on installing Exchange 2000 Server:

You must have DNS installed on a server in your domain serving a forward lookup zone for your domain. The forward lookup zone must accepts dynamic updates. This is crucial to almost all Active Directory operations.

You do not have to install Exchange Server on a domain controller. In fact it's recommended that you don't if you can avoid it. The server you're installing on must be a member of the domain and must be using the above-mentioned DNS server as it's primary DNS server.

You must have NNTP installed and running on the server.

You must run setup.exe /forestprep and setup.exe /domainprep to get active directory's schema ready for the exchange 2000 install.

W2k networks don't have pdc's or bdc's anymore. Once you get the second server to join the domain, you can install AD. One thing to remember is AD is DNS dependent. Make sure dns is working correctly first, then go for AD. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

Exchange is actually on my first server. started out with only one. I have already transfered the roles of RID, PDC, Inf.

I will be moving DOmain naming, and schema shortly. Thanks for all the info, cleared some issues up for me.

I have demoted my second server. transfered the schema and domain naming master operations to the second server. I installed the ADC on the exchange server and all seems to be working well.

if you could steer me to any whitepaper on e2k, i would appreciate it.

all the papers seem to point to the active directory connector only being used to connect exchange 5.5 to active directory but i have found that if you use it to connect the server that will have exchange 2000 0n before running setup it works fine.ofcourse your tcp/ip settings must be pointing to the appropriate dns server. i have set exchange up this way before and had no problems.

yes, that is what i am seeing also. i installed the ADC but, i believe it really isn't doing anything. i already had the e2k server in the schema and was just demoting the server to a member server. I only had one worry after it was all done.

when i would go to create a new user on the DC, i wasn't presented with the Exchange, create mailbox when i was using the wizard.

U either have to install the Exchange Manager on the DC, or use the Users and Computers Snap-in on the Member Server running exchange.

if you are not getting the create mailbox option when you create new users in active directory you can actually install the adc on the domain controller. I have also found that this fixes the mailbox problem.
