Quick question, can Oracle 9i and 7 coexist on the same machine? Oneworld

Hi

Certified reply is NO !!!

Oracle version 7.0 works only until Windows NT 4.0 - it is not certified to Windows 2000 or Windows XP(2003) servers. It is possible to cheat - so Oracle 7 can work on Windows 2000, but if in production I would not do it. Ex. you got problems in listener and with TCP/IP because this is changed from Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2K.

Oracle has certified Oracle 9i to work from Windows 2000.

AND more important - a Client with version 7 can't connect to a Oracle 9i server. Your clients need to be ether Oracle 8i or 9i. If you got applications depends on DDL version 7 (old applications) then you got a problem.

You can't get any support if trying the above ether from Oracle or vendors. Regards

Hi

:-) - so you are not using Windows - I guess because you did not wrote anything.

Do you not have access to Oracle Metalink?

You are using HP OpenVMS Alpha 64 bit server? Regards

HI,
As to Windows ( for others maybe if not you)
V8.0.x, 8.1.x and 9..x.x can coexist as clients on the same machine...Seprarate homes are needed, but all work fine..The V8 clients ( 8.0.x or 8.1.x) can connect to V7 databases - the v9 cannot..
so, if you need V7 connectivity, use one of the v8 clients

Hi Turbear

Client version 7.3, 8.0.x, 8i and 9i can coexists on the same machine - I know because I have this installation on my laptop.

My point was, that EXE applications depending on version 7 DLL (client 7) can't connect to Oracle 9i you need to update the compiler tool and recompile the source under Oracle 8i or Oracle 9i. Ex.'Centura Developer' version 1.xx - 2.xx need version 'Centura Developer 2000'. Regards

Hi,
Point well taken, Allan...
Those apps that have been 'hard coded' with a particular version of the Oracle DLLs or Libraries will be restricted by the capabilities and compatiblities of that version..

It is Open VMS. I really appreciate all your help thus far. What about on Unix? Can they coexist there? This is a major business critical app running on legacy stuff. You can probably all feel my pain. Oneworld

Hi OneWorld

I guess you do not have access to Oracle Metalink? (and you do not have Oracle support)

How can you have a business critical app. and not support from vendor - old installation?

If you give me your email address (you can contact me on Iqc or just write your email here) - I can email a word document with certified Oracle platform on HP OpenVMS for Alpha 64bit - but I would also contact Oracle sales rep. for a garantee - but if you do not have a correct Oracle license you can't contact them :-) Regards
