With Windows 98, when you shut down, 98 actually turns off the power supply to the system. I've noticed 2000 just tells you it's safe to turn your computer off. Is there anyway to get 2000 to turn the power system off like 98 does?
I have looked in the help but cannot find any assistance there.

This is a Pc by PC thing......I believe it mostly depends on the bios. I am not sure what settings control this, but I have encountered both.

For example, I had a PC that Win98 did not power off at shutdown. When I upgraded to Win2000, it still did not power off for me. I now have a PC that had Win98 at purchase that powered off automatically at shutdown, and again, when I wiped the drive and installed Win2000.....It powers off like it did in Win98. Dear move-it!
Just go to Control panel, then to Power Options. In the dialog box go to APM (Advanced Power Management)and check
(v) Enable APM... Reboot your machine and enjoy!
