Hi,

It appears a user did an ‘Office Update’ with some office applications open.

First symptom is: can’t connect to logical disk manager. I waited 30 minutes for logical disk manager (I saw a posting that it could take a long time)

Second is: system just hangs when trying to shutdown.

Thirdly, a chkdsk shows prefetch file “cmd.exe_….pf” has “first allocation unit not valid” I’ve cleared all prefetch files but problem comes back when prefetch is repopulated.

I thought to replace cmd.exe but can’t find one that is same size as prefetch,(on my PC)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. This PC is used as a workgroup server at a church were I volunteer support and replacing it would be extremely difficult.

Thanks
B.Leonard

Your chkdsk result is an indication of a bad first FAT unit on your on your hard drive, not an issue with your prefetch folder or its contents.

Your statement: "First symptom is: can’t connect to logical disk manager." is symptomatic of a hard drive problem as well.

No matter how many Office applications you may have had open during an upgrade, the Windows installer does not need to touch your prefetch folder; nor is it going to cause a FAT error on CMD.EXE. You could always use the Windows Installer cleanup utility, but I believe your problem is a failing hard drive:
[li]Make sure you have an excellent backup.[/li]
[li]Do a chkdsk /r from Recovery Console.[/li]
[li]If no substantial improvement is suggested, try a non-destructive testing using the drive diagnostic utility of the hard drive manufacturer.[/li]
