I've searched through the archives on this site, but I'm still a little unclear.

* 10 WinXP workstations
* 3 Win2003 servers
* All 10 workstations will connect to all 3 servers at the same time.

In this scenario, how many Win2003 CALs do I need? From my understanding, I need 10 CALs. Is this correct or do I need 30?

You will need three Win2003 licenses.

Then you will need 10 CALs for EACH server.

Each CAL is assigned, depending on which type you purchase, to a machine or user. But each CAL only applies to one server.

Bleh, I don't know if I'm being clear or not.

The short of it is (shaddap I'm blonde, this rambling is short for me!) take each server individually and figure out how many systems you'll have connecting to it. That is the number of CALs you need for that system, rinse and repeat.

I should have mentioned I am using per seat licensing, not per server. It sounds as though you're suggesting I need 30 CALs, but does that apply for per seat mode?

Finally, I have found a Microsoft article that explains my answer clearly, and it even has a graphic to make it more clear.

In the situation I posted when using per device/user/seat, I would need 10 CALs.

My question was not regarding server licenses, as I knew I needed a server license for each server.

candy, I would note that frequently a purchased server license comes with 5 client CALs included, so I'd check and make sure that you don't already have 15 client licenses.

Yeah, I know what you're getting at, and I will definately take that into account. Thanks.
