I've been trying to get this question answered but there is no one who can really tell me for sure if this is true. Well, is it true that Windows XP Pro comes with an implicit CAL for connection to Windows 2003 Server or 2000 Server?

So, if I bought a Windows 2003 Server with 5 CALs and have 25 Windows XP Pro, I should install the Server in Per Seat Mode and assume that all computers will be licensed?

Thanks...

Well, I've never heard or seen that XP Pro had an 'implicit CAL' for connection to any server (you can have a max of 10 connections to other peers, though). If you have 5 CALs for your server, the sixth client connection will not be allowed. In the network you describe, I would purchase 20 more server CALs (more if there's any chance of growth) and be done with it. I hope this helps,

XP Pro only has a 'built-in' CAL for W2000 terminal services access and I think to W2003 TS if the XP was bought before a certain date.

For normal file/print access to a server you must have bought a normal CAL for each client. If you want to access a server via Terminal Services you also need a separate CAL on top of the normal CAL.

Clear as mud really.
