We're close to setting up a new Frame Ckt. Our network consultant recommended that I cache internet dns records locally to try and cut down on local traffic. What do I have to do to start caching. Do I create a . root zone on the server? Will records be cached as users access different internet sites? Intranet domain zone is caching records just fine.

Hi Pilot1,

Please do the following if have not already done so...
- install the DNS service on your Windows 2000 Server
- in the Forward Lookup Zones under your domain name, ensure the "." (dot) zone is deleted BEFORE the next step
- configure the DNS service to use Forwarders (use your ISP's or any other DNS servers for this)
- point your client PCs to the DNS server as the Preferred DNS Server in TCP/IP properties

Yes, your Windows 2000 Server WILL cache DNS requests which will have the effect of reducing name lookup traffic over time.

Ok, have already done that. Just wanted to make sure nothing else was required.

Appreciate the answer!! Pilot1
