Hi,

I have a cable modem plugged into an ethernet card in my PC. I need to change the ethernet card - is this going to screw things up due to the MAC address change?

TIA,

Ed Metcalfe.

It shouldn't. It depends on your configuration. If you are using a router that has been assigned to only allow known MAC addresses, then you would have to change the router settings to allow all connections. Then after installing the new card and going back into the router, you can add the new MAC address and restrict access again. The same would be true for any cable modem that has been set the same way.

If you are directly connected from the PC to the modem, then powering off/on the cable modem should take care of it.

What I would do if I was you is to use a utility like ipconfig /all which will show you the hardware address of the MAC. Write the MAC address down and see if your router can do Masquerading. This is when you give the router a MAC address that you input manually and that is what the router uses for all the PC's externally. It will appear all network requests come from that original MAC address.
