Does anyone know if building your own shopping cart is cheaper in the long run than using a pre-built one like Yahoo shopping? I want to rebuild my brothers website,
/ that uses Yahoo shopping, into one that uses ASP.NET with SQL Server. Right now he pays $100.00 a month, plus 1% of total sales to Yahoo.
Has anyone built a store that uses ASP.NET and could tell me what kind of fees they pay to keep it running? Fees like web hosting, credit card processing, merchant account or any other service that is needed.
I’m using the IbuySpy store (/ as a model to copy and customize and I like it so far. Having your own shopping cart gives you much more control over it also.
Thanks

Hi Mike,

I've built a number of shopping carts. My most recent site is
My client is paying ~$30 a month for hosting. As for credit card processing, he processes them manually with a merchant account weekly at the bank. He's thinking of us another service, perhaps Moneris ( and processing the credit cards online.

Nice site Keith, I like the design
Do you have any other examples I can check out?
Thanks

Has anybody had good or bad experiences with an
ASP.NET shopping cart?

Wrox used to have a book called "E-Commerce", where they go over building a shopping-cart system using VB6, SQL 7 and MTS (yeah, it's a little old now). But the same concepts could easily be transferred to a modern implmentation.

Chip, I was going to get this book:
But the 2nd edition is coming this June so I'll
wait for it.

jb, I am also using the Commerce starter kit from asp.net
(IBuySpy Store). How much customizing have you had to do
to it? Could you recommend a good hosting site and credit card processor? I would like to see your site if you can supply a link.
Thanks
Mike
