Building own machine with Vista 3

I know this is the forum for Windows XP but I would like to ask a question about Vista. I am thinking of getting the 64 bit Version and I am wondering how that works with 32 bit apps. Do they run in an emulation mode? Is there software out there that will run on 64 bit? Would I be better off with a 64 bit version of XP? Thank you so much for any help.

I think the forum1583 would be much more appropriate.

However, based on what I've read and heard. There seems to be much more support for 64 bit stuff now than when 64bit XP came about.

32 bit Applications should not have any problems running on 64 bit Vista. However Hardware drivers are another story.

Unless you want > 4GB RAM you are probably better with 32 bit Vista, if vista you want (personally I'd keep XP if I didn't need to support Vista). Virtually all new Vista PC/laptops have 32 bit version - mainly self-builds with 64 bit. I started with 64 bit, but abandoned (well left as second boot) for compatibility issues (32 bit also, but not as many) - though some of mine were 16 bit apps, which 64 bit doesn't run.

If you look at Vista forum here and elsewhere, you'll see lots of satisfied customers and lots of people like me who have had one issue after another (nothing catastrophic, just annoying) - particularly performance (have installed test versions of vista on older machines - and they did run faster than my main machine too! But XP flies on main machine - so think its luck of the draw (I've started from scratch several times too). 64 bit XP (I have on another test machine), I like (its quick) - but depending on hardware/software you're using, you may have issues.

Vista 64-bit (x64) will be able to run 32-bit (x86) applications (if they install OK) and read their files or other (x86) files. You will have two Program Files folders, one for 64-bit applications, and one for x86 applications. Vista will install the programs into the appropriate folder. Similarly you will have two System folders, System32 and SysWOW64. All Windows Updates must be for the 64-bit operating system however.
